The Lycurgus Cup is a 4th-century Roman glass cup that is renowned for its unique ability to change color depending on the lighting conditions. When lit from the outside, the cup appears green, but when lit from within, it appears red. This phenomenon is due to the presence of tiny particles of gold and silver in the glass, which were added to the molten glass mixture during its creation. These particles, known as colloids, are so small that they are able to scatter light in different ways, depending on the angle of the light source. When light enters the cup from the outside, the shorter, blue wavelengths are scattered more than the longer, red wavelengths, giving the cup its greenish hue. However, when light is shone from within the cup, the longer wavelengths are able to pass through the glass more easily, giving it a reddish appearance. This innovative use of colloids in glassmaking was a remarkable achievement for its time, and the Lycurgus Cup remains one of the most famous examples of ancient Roman glasswork.
