Terrence "Terry" McGinnis, known as Batman Beyond, is a superhero in the DC Comics universe who succeeds Bruce Wayne as Batman in a futuristic setting. Created by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini, the character debuted in the animated television series Batman Beyond with the pilot episode "Rebirth," which aired on January 10, 1999. He made his comic book debut shortly thereafter in Batman Beyond #1 (March 1999), a six-issue miniseries that adapted the animated storyline into print, establishing Terry as the protector of Neo-Gotham decades after Bruce Wayne's retirement.

As a teenager in a cyberpunk-inspired Gotham City, Terry McGinnis grows up in a fractured family and briefly runs afoul of the law before seeking redemption. His life changes dramatically when his father, Warren McGinnis, is murdered by corporate magnate Derek Powers after discovering illegal activities. Pursued by Powers' forces, Terry seeks refuge on the grounds of Wayne Manor, uncovers Bruce Wayne's secret identity, and appropriates an advanced, high-tech Batsuit. Despite initial resistance from the elderly and reclusive Bruce, Terry proves his worth by defeating Powers (who becomes the villain Blight), earning Bruce's mentorship and officially assuming the role of Batman.

Over time, significant revelations and developments have deepened Terry's character. In the Justice League Unlimited episode "Epilogue" (2005), it is disclosed that Amanda Waller, through Project Batman Beyond, genetically engineered Terry to be Bruce Wayne's biological son by overwriting his father's DNA, ensuring a worthy successor. Integrated into broader DC continuity through crossovers such as Superman/Batman Annual #4 (2010), Futures End (2014), and the DC Rebirth era (2016 onward), Terry has faced threats like the returned Joker, joined future iterations of the Justice League, and navigated personal challenges while upholding the Batman legacy with resourcefulness, humor, and reliance on technology.
