Sigrun Skadi is an Icelandic frost giant with an imposing build, blue skin, and the deeply practical temperament of someone who spends her working life maintaining machinery that absolutely must continue doing what it's supposed to do. She works as a maintenance technician at a geothermal power plant, where she is happiest with a clear problem, the correct tools, and enough time to fix it properly.
Reserved and methodical, Sigrun isn't unfriendly so much as economical. She thinks before she speaks, dislikes unnecessary complication, and has very little patience for solutions involving the words “temporary,” “probably,” or “good enough.” She maintains her own belongings with the same care she brings to work and has been known to repair friends' possessions without comment after becoming tired of watching them continue to use something obviously broken.
Her closest friend is Ingrid Stormdottir, whom Sigrun first encountered wandering along a service road near the geothermal plant after getting thoroughly lost on a hike. Sigrun gave her water, determined where she'd intended to be, and drove her back. Ingrid talked almost continuously. Sigrun assumed that would be the end of it. Ingrid did not.
Some time later Ingrid introduced her to Yrsa Fjellheim, a Norwegian troll studying environmental science. Sigrun and Yrsa understood one another almost immediately. Both like preparation, competence, quiet conversation, and knowing what they're doing before they begin doing it. Their difference is largely one of approach: Yrsa wants to understand why something works; Sigrun wants to know whether it works reliably and where the appropriate wrench is kept.
Together, the three have settled into a friendship whose internal division of labor nobody formally established. Ingrid generates plans faster than anyone can evaluate them, Yrsa researches the sensible ones, and Sigrun makes sure everybody returns with the same number of limbs they started with. Sigrun complains about this arrangement regularly while continuing to participate in it.
Asked why, she generally shrugs.
She already packed the first-aid kit.
