    What VAE did this checkpoint use?

    I'm using two alternating VAE. kl-f8-anime2 and vae-ft-mse-840000-ema-pruned are the ones.

    @bodlo any tips? (pls)

    @angy2218581 If you are still having difficulty using a VAE, here's your answer. If you've figured it out, then there are probably a few things in this comment that you want to read anyway.

    To add a VAE when generating images if you're using the Automatic1111 webui

    At the top, where you pick your checkpoint, to the right is a box called SD VAE. (If it's not there, read below.) From there you can select whichever VAE you have installed.

    To install VAEs: Copy them to the VAE folder underneath your models folder. After that, you'll need to refresh your VAE list by hitting the 🔄 to the right of the list or restart the webui.

    If the SD VAE dropdown box is not there: Go to your settings, and hit User Interface on the left column. Scroll down to Quicksettings list. It will probably say sd_model_checkpoint and possibly some other stuff. In that list, items are separated by commas. You want to add this as the second item: sd_vae. So the contents of the box should start with sd_model_checkpoint, sd_vae and then possibly have other stuff after it.

    TIP: You may want to also add sd_vae_as_default, which will give you a checkbox. When that checkbox is checked, it will always use the VAE you specify in that dropdown box when you are making images — even if the checkpoint has a VAE included in it. If the checkbox is not checked, then if a checkpoint has its own VAE, it will use it. If it doesn't, then the one you specify will be selected. Personally, I usually override the checkpoint's VAE because a lot of them have crappy VAEs in them.

    Another TIP: If it is not there, you may also want to add CLIP_stop_at_last_layers to that textbox (remember to separate with a comma!), which will let you quickly and easily change the CLIP Skip setting right from your main screen.

    There are many more values you can put in the Quicksettings area if you want. In addition to these, I also add eta_ddim and img2img_color_correction. I use the DDIM sampler a lot because it's fast, and the eta_ddim setting lets me generate variations of the same image, only slightly different, even using the same prompt and other settings. It's a convenient way to get variations once you have an image that is almost what you want. The img2img_color_correction checkbox will tell img2img to match the colors of the original image when inpainting. But if I'm not inpainting, I want to turn that off. What if the image I start with is a black and white sketch? I probably don't want to generate a black and white image, so I turn it off. I turn it on only for inpainting.

    Hopefully this helps. If you aren't using the Automatic1111 webui, I apologize, but I can't help you. That's the only interface I use well enough to give help.

    @dita Thank you so much! You are an angel! Do you have any suggested VAE I should download? Maybe the link to the page I should check?

    ditaMay 18, 2023

    @angy2218581 Glad that helped you. :) I almost always use the blessed2 VAE. I think it should work well for this and all of bodlo's checkpoints.
